November 2017
It has been fifty (50) years since a group of Black officers met in secret to form the Massachusetts Association of Afro-American Police (MAAAP), which ultimately became the Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers(MAMLEO). On
October 19, 2018, we will be holding a "President's Ball", a Gala event at Lombardo's to celebrate the progress that has been made over fifty (50) years and to pledge ourselves to continue the fight for officers of color throughout the Commonwealth. It is unfortunate that many of the issues that faced MAAAP still exist. We can take pride for our wins and learn from our losses. Other organizations are working in parallel to us and we congratulate the Latino Law Enforcement of Boston (LLEGO) for their efforts.
MAMLEO is going to stay the course and, in order to thrive, new blood and new ideas are needed. Elections are upcoming and several Board positions will be open. Run for a seat and have your voice be heard. If each member does a little, a lot more could be accomplished. Come to a monthly Saturday general meeting. Find out what work is being done to better the opportunities for promotion, to overcome unfair discipline and to get more qualified recruits of color into the Academy.
Lastly, I want to personally thank all the personnel that put together the "Time for a Friend". It was very much appreciated.

President
